Blog Post #10

Press Coverage

For this blog post about press coverage over Trump I picked three news articles about Trump and the recent executive order he signed April 18th ‘Buy American, Hire American’ which pretty much orders federal agencies to review the H-1B visa program that allows companies to hire foreign workers.

Conservative news outlet: Fox News - Trump Signs order to clamp down on visa program, enforce ‘buy American’ policy, published April 18th  Fox News Story

Liberal news outlet: CNN - Trump pushed ‘Buy American, Hire American’ policy in Wisconsin, published April 18th  CNN Story

Bias news outlet: PBS – Trump signs executive order tightening rules on H1B visa program for highly skilled foreign workers, published April 18th PBS Story

The types of stores written about Trump are concerned with actions or policies he is doing. The three stories that I specifically looked at give a good idea of how different news outlets choose the approach and what part of the story they are going to cover. Fox News in this story approaches the topic by explaining that Trump is clamping down on the allowance of American Jobs being given to foreigners. FOX News explains how the order will allow for more jobs for Americans and not allow companies to hire cheap labor. CNN looks at the story through analyzing the effect of the order. CNN quotes CEO’s and officials stating the reasoning behind the H1B program and how this will affect foreigners. PBS gives information on both sides of the issue. First they explain what it is and how it would help Americans and then explains the backlash of the order. PBS also does a good job at comparing it to other orders and actions already made by the president which gives a good overall thematic frame of a long broad story and how it has changed.

Trump is by far was the most covered candidate during the election. Many polls show how much not only conservative news stations were covering him but liberal and bias outlets. Because of his unpredictable behavior and spontaneous actions that happened almost every day new outlets were constantly talking about him and still to this day are. Since being elected Trump has maintained to be the topic of every news outlet. Conservative news outlets like Fox News generally tell the information behind Trumps actions but also breaks down what Trump is trying to do and better explain it. Liberal news stations like CNN usually focus on how Trumps actions are effecting the public or other countries. Bias news outlets sometimes can lean further one way but do a good job at reporting the issue and giving background information on how things have came to that point.

Trump completely generates the news stories. He is the fuel to their flame and gives them many topics and stories to talk about. He also gets so much free publicity from tweets to news stations covering what he tweeted. If I was advising Trump the types of news stories I would be pitching to reporters would be about the good things that he is doing, or how people feel about the changes he has been making.

Because this is my favorite photo ever 😂
